Video In Print Advertising. The latest Gimmick.
It’s 50% print, 50% video, and 100% gimmick. I’m talking about the CBS advertisement that features the first video play embedded in a print magazine. I think it’s a technology that is better suited for the greeting card industry. Once the novelty wears off, the idea of video in print will be annoying more than anything else.
The video-in-print (VIP) ads will start appearing in select copies of the popular show-business magazine on Sept. 18, exclusively in Los Angeles and New York. According to the BBC, a slim LCD screen inserted within the magazine’s page will be similar to the size of a mobile phone display, and will measure 2.7mm thick, with a 320×240 screen resolution. Readers can expect to see clips from CBS‘ fall lineup, including “Two and a Half Men,” as well as a sneak peek of the new crime spinoff “NCIS: Los Angeles.” Another video clip will promote the Pepsi Max soft drink.
